COURTNEY’S ADVENTURE STORY

During a visit to Zion National Park where I rendezvoused with a friend to do a 47.9 mile backpacking trip of the Trans-Zion traverse, we arrived to the rangers office to find out that the permits were sold out. Never the ones to be dismayed, we decided to see if we could do a 36.9 mile variation of it in a day. We called shuttle companies and booked a ride on the last shuttle of the day with a leisure start time of 8:30am. We were on the trail by 10am and 2 miles in, my water bladder broke and burst all over my shorts. While it felt refreshing, we were nervous about the next 34 miles with just one bladder (there was nowhere to fill along the way) but we decided to push through. With 10 miles left, we were down any remaining food or water and the sun was starting to set. By the time we got down all the shuttles had stopped running. Fortunately, we ran into a biker on the roads and asked if he had a vehicle in the park that he could use to come back to pick us up and take us back to the campground, he kindly obliged and we made it home by 12am and started driving off to find dispersed camping outside of the park.
