CLAIRE’S ADVENTURE STORY
With a group of 10 young campers following behind me on the wooded trail in the Maine wilderness, I knew that we couldn’t be far from our final campground destination. I told the other counselor to stay with the campers while I ran ahead to confirm we were on the right path. Just as I reached a clearing, I saw what I thought was a large, black dog, lumbering away from me. I froze. That is not a dog, that is a bear! Luckily, my instinct was to clasp my hands over my mouth so as not to make a noise, pause until it was far enough away, and sprint as quietly as I could back the way I came. Adrenaline pumping, I ran as fast as I could back to the group of campers, and led them in a different direction to safety.
